Following independence Anna !Ganes was bestowed veteran status by Government in recognition of her meaningful contribution to the liberation struggle of the country.
She was part of the fight for the recognition of the #Ao Daman Traditional Authority until its recognition in 2008, when she became a Senior Councillor.
For the past four years, she's been battling ill health until she died on her birthday on the 24th of December, aged 81.
Speaking at the funeral, her daughter Anita Gaochas described her late mother as a woman of strong values who instilled morals in her children and in all those she helped raise.
“She taught us about leadership, how you behave in your contact with the community, how to talk with your siblings and everyone who is around you, and that you have to treat each and everyone with respect, and then you have to keep your reputation, how you carry yourself amongst the people. She stood for these things.”
The late !Ganes is survived by three children, 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
