The Namibian Police are investigating two counter cases stemming from a land dispute in the Kanono area of the Zambezi Region, which led to the arrest of 11 suspects.
According to the police report, the first incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Sunday, 18 January, when a 58-year-old male teacher pointed a firearm at a 39-year-old male complainant and threatened to shoot him if he ran.
About an hour later, the complainant returned with 10 family members, who assaulted the teacher.
Head of community policing in the Zambezi Region, Chief Inspector Kisco Sitali, told NBC News that the teacher suffered severe injuries, including a broken jaw, dislodged teeth, a swollen left eye and little finger, plus chest, head, and back pains.
The family members also stole the teacher’s firearm from his car, leading to charges of attempted murder and theft. This resulted in the arrest of the 10 family members, including the original complainant.
The 58-year-old teacher remains admitted to Katima Mulilo State Hospital and has yet to be charged.
Chief Inspector Sitali noted that police investigations revealed the land dispute had already been reported to the traditional authority. He appealed to traditional authorities to expedite processes for resolving such disputes.
