Refugees and asylum seekers requested an extension of the verification period.
Victor Afande, Refugees Spokesperson, said, “When the government and the UNSCR announced that they were going to do verification for the refugees in Windhoek, it was a relief for us because the transport from Windhoek to Osire is N$300 per person. Now we have families here who have like six children. For six children, for a person to afford transport is already N$1,800. And imagine the majority of families live below the poverty line. It was a relief when we got the information that all refugees and asylum seekers in Windhoek will be doing our verification here.”
Commissioner Josephine Kampolo emphasised, 'The purpose of this exercise is for the government of the Republic of Namibia to verify how many refugees and asylum seekers are in Namibia.' This exercise is very important for the ministry so that we know who these people are that we are giving international protection to."
