Student teachers at UNAM's Keetmanshoop campus have called for improved funding for practical training programmes.
This was revealed by a lecturer from UNAM's School of Education, Simon Albin, during an interview with NBC News following the conclusion of the school's seminar.
The seminar focused on how the National Work-Integrated Learning Policy should be implemented for student teachers.
However, during discussions, students raised concerns that they lack funding and basics for practical training.
"They have raised issues that they don't have a uniform that affects their confidence; they don't have an allowance that affects their energy to present in class, and they also overall have an outlook of where they will get money for transport, food, accommodation and clothing," highlighted Albin.
Albin further stated that the seminar proposed stakeholders invest in education, adding such a boost would enhance student well-being, improve the quality of training, and secure the future of education.
"What the seminar proposes is that stakeholders such as social security, MTC, Keetmans Toyota and Letsogo and we also invited all the banks of Keetmans, including Telecom and Nampost; it's time they come on board and invest in teachers' education, particularly at the Southern Campus."
More than 62 participants attended the seminar, including heads of academic affairs, deputy directors, unit directors, HODs from various campuses, guests from Durban University of Technology and UNAM alumni.
