The Fellowship of Christian Councils in Southern Africa (FOCCISA) has condemned the rise in xenophobic attacks, hate crimes and speech targeting migrants in South Africa.

It says violence and discrimination against fellow Africans violate human dignity and go against the African values of unity, compassion and shared humanity.

The FOCCISA acknowledges that many communities face challenges, such as unemployment, poverty and inequality.

However, it says these problems should never be used to justify violence or blame migrants for economic hardships.

The organisation also reminded the region that many African countries supported South Africans during the liberation struggle in various ways.

It says this shared history should inspire African nations to continue promoting hospitality, peace and regional unity.

FOCCISA has called on the South African government to protect everyone within its borders, regardless of nationality, and to ensure that those responsible for xenophobic attacks are brought to justice.

The regional church body is also urging African governments to address the root causes of migration, including conflict, poverty and lack of economic opportunities.

Churches, political leaders, the media and the public are being encouraged to reject hate speech, promote peaceful coexistence and support those affected by violence.

They say Africa must choose compassion over hostility and solidarity over division, adding that lasting peace can only be achieved by respecting the dignity of every person.
