Botswana's plan to develop a 100 million litre fuel storage facility in Swakopmund is taking shape, with Botswana Oil Limited announcing progress on the much-anticipated project.

Addressing journalists during a media tour of Botswana Oil Limited, Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer Letshego Moeng said his organisation has secured the land to develop it, and it is a matter of purchasing it.

Moeng said the development is part of Botswana's efforts to strengthen regional fuel supply security and energy infrastructure, thanks to unwavering support from the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR).

"Our intent is to build a 100-million-litre storage facility in Namibia. We have identified properties for which we have started negotiations with one of the landowners. We have a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with our counterpart in Namibia, which is NamCor, which is a national oil company. So, we will also work with them for any other requirements that may arise. Our government also collaborates with the Namibian government to address energy requirements and needs."

According to Moeng, the storage facility here will facilitate the importation of fuel from the Middle East and Europe and enhance Botswana's self-sufficiency in terms of supply.
