Grootfontein Municipality has sworn in two new council members after a position was left vacant by Rates and Taxpayers Association councillor Deon Van Blerk in March 2026.
Council has sworn in Zelda Van Rooi as its newest councillor; she takes over from Deon Van Blerk, from the same association.

She is to serve as a member of the management committee, while Swapo Oartu of Namibia councillor Susan Swartz is now the deputy mayor of the town.

Grootfontein Mayor Moritz Gaingob called on the two to work in unison with fellow councillors.

"We are pleased to have you, all of you female councillors, to join Grootfontein Municipal Council. I encourage you to work hand in hand with fellow councillors and municipal management in sharing ideas, supporting one another and contributing positively to the development of our beautiful Grootfontein."

Van Rooi and Swartz were sworn in by Grootfontein Magistrate Abraham Abraham.

The process to fill the position was initially delayed, as the new councillor was only gazetted in July.
Blerk vacated the position due to personal reasons.
