NUDO has donated N$10,000 towards the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Support Fund.
The Party's President, Peter Kazongominja, explained that the move is aimed at supporting farmers affected by the outbreak and lessening the disease's impact on the livestock sector.
Kazongominja further called for a coordinated national response that balances disease control with the protection of farmers' livelihoods, particularly those of communal and small-scale farmers.
He also commended the government for its efforts to contain the outbreak.
The party, however, stressed that movement restrictions and disruptions to livestock marketing have placed additional pressure on the farming communities, affecting household incomes, employment and agricultural value chains.
“Our position is clear: disease control measures must remain effective, but the economic consequences should be assessed and mitigated wherever is reasonably possible."
The Chairperson of the fund, Medmillan Handura, noted that contributions from various institutions reflect the willingness to support a national initiative.
"We are sitting in excess of N$14 million. The fund has an objective to raise about N$50 million in support of the FMD or the DVS office in executing its tasks."
