Members of different Traditional Authorities in the ||Kharas region have expressed mixed views on the proposed expansion of the Namport Harbour in Lüderitz.
These views were raised during a recent consultation meeting in Keetmanshoop organised by the Office of ||Kharas Governor Dawid Gertze.
Some members of the !Aman Traditional Authority opposed the expansion, citing fear it could threaten Shark Island historical heritage and contribute to the removal of Nama history and identity.
Senior Councillor Diedrik Frederick shared his views.
"A hundred years from now, people may no longer be able to speak about these places because the history is gradually being erased. These are some of the tactics used to erase our history. I also want to know what happened to the promises made regarding the Neckartal dam, where there are also graves. The identities of minority groups are being erased through these kinds of tactics."
Meanwhile, another traditional authority member, Jacobus Jahr, supports the port expansion, arguing that the region cannot afford to lose an opportunity to address high unemployment.
He further suggested that the project should be redesigned to ensure that local communities, particularly the Nama-speaking people, are prioritised for employment opportunities.
Governor Gertze expressed disappointment in the outcome of the meeting.
"It's our opportunity to be cognisant of the voices of the youth. We are not here forever, and I want to hear the voices of the communities we serve."
Gertze said, however, he will take their recommendations and send them through to the National Heritage Council and will provide feedback to them on the way forward.
