The African Union has set up a youth wing as part of an organ known as the Panel of the Wise, which aims to curb issues of conflict, instability, and violence through dialogue and mediation in all countries.
The new wing, Wise-Youth-Africa Network, which was established through a decision of the 35th meeting of Heads of State in February this year, will allow young people to play a central role in conflict mediation and prevention.
Speaking to nbc News on the sidelines of the high-level meeting of diplomats from Africa that was held in Namibia, the AU Chairperson's Youth Envoy, Chido Mpemba, says youths in Africa are amongst the worst affected by issues of conflict and violence by virtue of high jobless rates, migration and humanitarian crisis.
She, however, appealed for the introduction of youth quotas in positions of authority, saying although only a few countries recruit youth envoys, a majority of African countries are yet to emulate such gestures.
Meanwhile, the AU Youth Ambassador for Peace in North Africa, Khouloud Ben Mansour, says issues of violent extremism, post-election tensions, and political instability are causing a great number of threats to Africa's success stories, urgently requiring peace.
On his part, AU's Acting Head of Liason in the Great Lakes Region, Gonzague-Patrick Balagizi, urged African young people to desist from fleeing the continent to explore livelihoods abroad due to instability, saying they should remain defiant and assist in efforts to restore law and order by all means.
The two-day meeting, also observed by the African Union's chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, sought to stimulate dialogue on the promotion of peace, security, and stability in Africa.
