Pohamba Shifeta, Environment and Tourism Minister, handed over a solar plant to Sheya Shuushona Conservancy Lodge in the Omusati Region's Otamanzi Constituency.

The project was implemented during the climate change resilience program through Community Based Natural Resources Management in Namibia.

The intervention is aimed at empowering locals and encouraging enterprise development through joint ventures and with an off-take agreement in place with Namibia Exclusive Safari in Sheya Shuushona conservancy.

Shifeta believes that increased use of renewable energy will protect the country from the negative effects of climate change while also acting as a catalyst for improved social and economic development in rural areas.

The project stands as an example of transformation at the local level and of the local community's resilience in managing their natural resources.

Shifeta praised the timing of the initiative, applauding the community for diversifying their means of livelihood in the face of severe climate challenges.

The Sheya Shuushona Conservancy solar plant, at 150-kilowatt capacity, will contribute to the conservancy's tourism ambitions by meeting renewable energy and energy efficiency targets.

The project has thus far benefited 3,551 people and created 17 jobs.

Ten young people have been trained in solar plant operations, maintenance, and administration.
