A group of students at the Namibia University of Science and Technology are demanding the nullification of recent election results for the Student Representative Council, claiming irregularities.
In a letter to the Head of Election Committee and Student Support Services, one of the aggrieved students, Sakaria Elago, alleged that the rules and procedures were not followed.
Elago, in this letter, claims students who contested positions in the SRC were barred from verifying results on the electronic voting machines to determine whether they were credible.
He says a plea to monitor such elections also fell on deaf ears, as candidates were informed that their role was merely to contest and await the results.
Elago also accused the Electoral Committee of de-campaigning some candidates by destroying campaign posters, among others, while students were allowed to cast ballots on unsanctioned days.
This, he says, is in violation of the agreed dates, which he suspects brings the entire process into disrepute.
He also claims that only a handful of the 14,560 students voted, as those who study distance were barred from voting for reasons yet to be known.
In his letter, Elago also demanded that a new independent electoral committee be sanctioned to oversee a re-run of the election.
In response, NUST Communications Officer Nadia Meding informed nbc News that a complaint had been lodged by Elago.
She says, in line with the provisions of the Student Union Constitution, a tribunal has been constituted to hear the case and evaluate the evidence.
