Swapo Party President Hage Geingob says much to the disappointment of some critics, the party's internal campaigns have been peaceful and unique.

Dr Geingob said this when he opened the Swapo Party Central Committee meeting in Windhoek, ahead of the party's elective congress starting on Friday.

The 7th congress of the Swapo Party is expected to elect a new vice-president, secretary-general and deputy-general as well as members of the central committee.

The candidates have since been on whirlwind campaign trails across the country and to engage the delegates to the congress.

President Geingob says history will be made either way by the outcome of the elective congress.

Party members who have so far indicated to retire from active politics in two years' time are Professor Peter Katjavivi, Dr Albert Kawana, Carl Schlettwein and Doreen Sioka.

President Geingob urged others who may not make it into positions at the congress to accept defeat and retire in dignity.
