President Hage Geingob says the 7th elective congress of the Swapo Party is yet another opportunity for members to recognize the party's shortcomings and aim to emerge stronger.

Dr Geingob who will chair the proceedings over the next two days, made the statement as he officially opened the congress.

According to Geingob the Swapo Party is poised to usher in a new era, whether it realises it or not, with the outcome of the elective congress.

The Swapo Party's leader also took a swipe at some analysts, who he says exaggerated alleged disunity within the Party.

Dr. Geingob defended the campaign method that the Party deployed this time around, with contenders engaging delegates directly during the campaigns as one group.

The President also dismissed talks of senior party members allegedly planning to desert the governing party and form their own.

Using his own example of accepting defeat at previous congresses, Dr. Geingob says he did not complain nor discredit Party leadership but embraced the outcome.

Ahead of Sunday's much-anticipated election of the top three leaders and members of the central committee, the more than 700 delegates are also expected to consider reports of the implementation of resolutions of the 6th congress.
