The Swakopmund Constituency Office handed over two large tents to the Namibia Red Cross Society, meant to assist nine fire victims whose shacks burned down on Family Day in Swakopmund.

It is alleged that the fire started in one of the nine shacks and spread to eight more, destroying them all, including the contents inside.

No loss of life was reported, but a 24-year-old man suffered minor injuries after falling off a roof while trying to fight the blaze.

Erongo Governor Neville André advised the municipality to train residents in fire suppression.

"These are people that are vulnerable, and it's an area of Build Together houses, and these are people that tried so hard to get the houses, and I think in this area alone, one can say that it's a fire-prone area."

Also speaking at the handover were Swakopmund Mayor Dina Namubes and the Namibia Red Cross Society's Christopher Barwa.

"It was really very sad because these days are marked for a reason, and you need to enjoy yourself with your family. They did not enjoy themselves, and I felt really bad."

"Our mandate is to assist in disasters and emerging situations where people are facing extreme vulnerability. When a house burns down and people lose everything, there is a need to provide shelter for people; many of them have small children who need a place to sleep."
