Residents of the Ombili informal settlement at Otjiwarongo will no longer have to carry heavy buckets of water on their heads after a generous benefactor donated hippo rollers to 50 households.
Although it has become a daily practice for informal settlement residents to walk distances to fetch water at community taps one, can never get used to the discomfort that comes with carrying up to 20 liters or more on the head as it causes pain or even long term injuries to the neck and the spinal cord.
Four years ago, Ignatius Davids saw elderly women fall with a bucket of water on her head injuring herself - a picture that stuck in his memory and it was at this point that he decided to secure funds to buy hippo rollers for his community, especially for the elderly and the disabled.
Davids plans to roll out the project of donating Hippo rollers to Otavi, Kalkfeld, and Groofontien.
One roller costs N$3 000 and 50 of them come at N$150 thousand in total.
