The water levels in the Cuvelai flood plains generally known as oshanas have risen due to heavy rains and all necessary precautionary measures need to be in place for possible floods.

This was revealed by the Deputy Director for Hydrology in the Agriculture, Water and Land Reform Pauline Mufeti.

With heavy rains that continue to be recorded in southern Angola, some parts in the North should start bracing itself for more floods.

Mufeti told NBC News that the floods experienced are a result of heavy rains in neighboring Angola, resulting in the catchment in the Cuvelai receiving more water than usual.

She however notes that the current situation is not as yet comparable to the flooding situation in 2011, where the highest levels in recent history were recorded.

The country has not yet reached the peak of the rainy season and this year is predicted a 'LaNina' year, where Namibia expects normal to above-normal rains.

Mufeti emphasises the need for careful monitoring of the water situation both locally and upstream Angola, where the headwaters of the Cuvelai system originate.

Currently, she stressed the need for preparedness and for flood hazard contingency plans to be set up for flood-prone areas.
