The National Council has called for an urgent investigation into the poor performance of the country's education system.

The House of Review therefore mandated the Standing Committee on Education, Science, ICT, and Youth Development to commence with the investigation and report back at the latest by September.

Namibia's final academic year has left a bitter pill to swallow for many stakeholders, including the lawmakers who now call for an investigation into the matter.

Oshakati East Constituency Councillor Abner Shikongo expressed concern over the high failure rate in primary and secondary schools, saying it warrants a relook.

Shikongo appealed to the House Standing Committee on Education, Science, ICT, and Youth Development to investigate the pros and cons of the current education curriculum.

The Swapo MP wants the investigation to look into the readiness of teachers to implement the system, the issue of automatic promotion of learners, and the Grade 9 transfers and their effects on their admission to tertiary levels.

MPs also want the issues of the teacher-learner ratio in schools, the delay in the recruitment of relief or temporary teachers, and overcrowding in schools investigated and addressed.

Many MPs spoke in support of the motion.
