The much-anticipated 16th edition of the Namibia Annual Sports Awards held in Ondangwa on Saturday night saw marathon runner Helalia Johannes scooping the MTC Sports Star and Sportswoman of the year award, walking away with a whooping three-hundred thousand Namibia dollars in price money. Meanwhile, Jannie Meuwesen won the MTC sportsman of the year award. The night, which celebrated the country's sportsmen and women, was held under the theme "Celebrating sport excellence". People from all corners of the country, including politicians and sport lovers all came to join in on the celebrations. Archer Quinn Reddig also emerged victoriously in two categories - namely the junior sportswoman and Nored People's Choice prizes, whilst the MTC junior sportsman prize went to Delano Muller. This year's Nampower Junior woman and man with disability awards were scooped by Emilia Iyambo and Bradley Murere respectively. Lahja Ishitile and Johannes Nambala both scooped the senior disability sport awards in their categories. Grant Dodds won the Namdia coach of the year prize; Fillemon Mweya won the best umpire award; beach volleyball and amateur golf shared the best team prizes; while the Basketball Artists School and Amateur Wrestling also shared the development programme of the year prize. The Namdia coach of the year category was dominated by Grant Dodds, whilst Fillemon Mweya won the best umpire award and Sheefeni Nicodemus was crowned as Sport Journalist of the year. Carlos Kambaekwa, Jason Petrus, Elifas Shivute, Bravo Mufeti and Carol Garoes Vetumbuayi all received lifetime awards for their contribution to sports over the years. The night was filled with the glitz and glam as various artists entertained the crowds throughout the festivities.
