Windhoek-Namibia joins the rest of the world in celebrating Olympic day on Saturday, the 23rd of June. The internationally celebrated Olympic Day provides a platform for the Namibia National Olympic Committee to promote Olympic values in sports and encourage participation, especially among the youth. Windhoek, Omaruru, Tsumeb, Keetmanshoop, Oshakati, Rundu and Katima Mulilo have been identified by the NNOC to host mini Olympic games. The philosophy concerning Olympism, is about connecting sports to culture and education, and encouraging a healthy mind and body. “The objective of the Olympic day is to promote the Olympic values and the Olympic spirit at country level, we have to include that we have to engage everybody who can physically move in activities on this day”Xoagub said. The celebrations are expected to attract close to four-thousand people across the designated towns. These people will come not only from sport bodies, but also from schools, clubs and corporates as well. “Come up in numbers to this events they are in different towns and make contact with the municipalities they will tell you where the event will start and where it will end and be part of this Olympic Movement” Xoagub said. The day will also serve as a curtain raiser for the African Youth games, which start on the 17th of July in Algiers, Algeria and the Youth Olympic games in Buenos Aires in October. All in all, the event is held to highlight the importance of the Olympic ideals and values as well as participation of athletes that have qualified for the events. Participants will hear the message delivered to all participating countries worldwide, from international Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. Additionally, all participants will receive a certificate of participation signed by Bach. The IOC has availed resources towards the commemorations taking place in 205 countries throughout the globe.
