Namibians clinched medals in South Africa

The one-day Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge held in George, South Africa on Sunday was successful for some of the Namibian para-athletes, who returned home with gold and silver medals. More than one thousand wheelchair cyclists took part in various races, including the 42.2 km, 21.1 km and 10 km races, as well as the 5 km fun event, which were held at the Race Village in George, South Africa. Athletes in racing Wheelchairs, Adapted Bicycles, Hand Cycles, Basketball chairs and ordinary Wheelchairs did not want to miss out on this premier sporting event for people with disabilities on the South African sporting calendar. Five Namibian para-athletes also participated in the Outeniqua race, four with the hand cycles and one with a wheelchair cycle. Frans "Tupac" Paulus could not make it into the top three, but manage to come out in the top five in the 42.2 km race. In the 21 km race wheelchair category, Namibia's Roodley Gowaseb scooped a gold medal, while in the hand cycle category the second place went to Kapuma Matias. Sebastian Joseph came fourth and fifth placed turned out to be Mitch De Walt. The NBC crew interview Gowaseb and Matias after their performance. “The race was very touch but I actually enjoy it, the only thing that I wanted to know was my time how fast did I go and how fast I did in 21 km” said Roodley Gowases “I didn't feel good because my target aim time, I didn't reach that time I was aiming to 30 minutes or 30 minutes that my time was 46 minutes than did not let me feel good” said Matias Coach of the para-athletic team, Michael Hamukwaya, was happy with the overall performance of the athletes. “This is important because is a qualifier most of this time this guy's athlete manage this championship at least it will help them to qualify for bigger and bitter events were it make it easier for them actually to qualify for the 2020 Olympics” Hamukwaya said. Paralympics games, because you need to have more games to qualify otherwise this was really a good opportunity and a good chance for the athletes. There is always a lot of challenges and stuff but really I'm very, very happy with the results that we manage at least the guys manage one Gold and one Silver medal. Four countries participated in the Outeniqua race. These included the host South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Ghana.
