Namibians win War Drag race at Okahandja

Okahandja-The 2018 Race War drag race with Namibian and South African drivers and riders in action at the Okahandja airstrip on Saturday saw some of the fastest times on the local motorsport scene. Of the total cars in action 37 were from Namibia and only 2 from South Africa as many of the cars from the neighboring country were broken and picked up mechanical problems prior to yesterday event. In the motorbike entrants, all five participants were from Namibia. Namibia took the bragging rights in both categories with Mike-Allen winning the bike category and Willie van der Merwe in his Nissan car the motorcar racing event. Van der Merwe recorded the fastest time which gave him 11, 9 points in the process. Otto Heyman, who is the Chairman of Okahandja Drag racing club was overwhelmed by the turn-up of spectators and the good driving skills. “I am very thankful for Namibian drivers. They are doing well, by giving their South African counterparts tough time. They started good and never look back and that alone shows about our quality in Motorsport. I hope they will build on this in future”Heyman said. A well-known face in local motor spin events Peter Opali was also in attendance and this is how he summed-up drag race in the country. The town of Okahandja is expected to host another drag race before the end of the year at a yet to be confirmed date.
