Cricket Namibia recently held its first development fun day for 2018 at the Oval cricket grounds in Walvisbay. More than 189 players, between the ages of 7-10, took part in the FNB Kwata cricket fun day hosted by Cricket Namibia. Implemented by Cricket Namibia, Kwata Cricket provides all young girls and boys with an opportunity to be exposed to the game of cricket and be coached on healthy lifestyles in a fun and safe environment. Specifically developed for young children, Kwata Cricket encompasses a fast, simplified version of cricket, which includes activities and games informing and encouraging participants on making healthy lifestyle choices. Kwata Cricket utilizes softballs and only basic cricket equipment. It can easily be played on any reasonable level surface. No formal field is needed, and Kwata Cricket can easily be introduced in any community. Young cricket coaches work in collaboration with local schools and teachers to teach this form of Cricket. Kwata Cricket aims to lay the foundation for a lifelong interest in cricket as well as imparting the many life skills and principles embedded in the sport. These life skills and principles include respect, discipline, teamwork, self-esteem and decision making skills, which all contribute to childhood development. “I am very happy with the outcome and had to cut the numbers, all the kids want to be part of this. It is all about the kids to come and have fun and enjoy, so i am happy with the outcome of the kids and parents who came out and support” said Hangula. Cricket Namibia now plans to host a cricket development fun day at the coast every semester.
