The Windhoek High Court on Tuesday heard that there was no urgency to elect a new Ovaherero “Paramount Chief” after the death of the late Ombara Otjitambi Vekuii Rukoro in 2021, but there was urgency to establish a transitional committee to manage the process.

The Ovaherero Traditional Authority is embroiled in a leadership tussle playing out in the Windhoek High Court, with a lawyer for the claimant alleging a "coup d'état."

Special Rapporteurs from the United Nations (UN) have confirmed that the participation rights of the Ovaherero and Nama people have been violated by the German and Namibian governments in terms of international law. The rapporteurs also urge the German government to grant reparations.
