Over 100 liberation struggle veterans attended the commemoration of Cassinga Day at Okongo in the Ohangwena Region.

The Swapo Party held a candlelight vigil at the party's headquarters to honour the heroes and heroines who lost their lives during the Cassinga Massacre in 1978 in Angola. 

On the 4th of May in 1978, an event took place in the Cassinga refugee camp in Southern Angola.

Community members of Vaalgras Village in the ||Kharas Region converged at the tiny village over the weekend to pay homage to their fallen heroes during the annual festival.

Today marks 45 years since the Cassinga massacre, during which about 600 Namibians died.

President Hage Geingob says it is not only a day to commemorate the selfless acts of sacrifice but also a day for Namibians to reaffirm patriotism and foster a true sense of pride and duty towards the nation.
