Namibia's exciting cycling tradition continued as the Tour de Windhoek concluded on Sunday.
After four days of challenging competition across five stages, the 7th edition crowned new champions. 17-year-old Alexander Erasmus emerged victorious in the men's category, while Kelsey-Jade Van Schoor dominated the women's race.
17-year-old Alexander Erasmus, representing Team on Track from South Africa, proved his talent against more experienced riders throughout the four-day event. Stepping in as a replacement, Erasmus secured both the Overall Men's Champion title and the Best Young Male Cyclist award in the Under-23 category.
An ecstatic Erasmus spoke to NBC Sport, expressing his delight at winning such a prestigious event. He highlighted the special significance of this victory as it was his first time participating in the Tour de Windhoek.
Making a similarly impressive debut at the Tour de Windhoek, Kelsey-Jade Van Schoor acknowledged the fierce competition from day one. Van Schoor prevailed as the overall women's champion and capped off her incredible performance with another podium finish as part of the winning Best Female Team for the 2024 edition.
This year's Tour de Windhoek attracted over 180 participants, including 11 men's teams and 6 women's teams. Cyclists from Angola, Botswana, South Africa, and the Union added an international flavour to the event.
The total prize money awarded reached N$121,750.
The competition featured six stages spread over four days, with categories for Overall Leader, King of the Mountains, Points Competition, Best Young Rider (under-23), Best Namibian Rider, and Team Competition.
