Rise in cybercrimes a concern

Prosecutor General Martha Imalwa is concerned about the increase in cybercrimes coupled with cross-border crimes committed in Namibia.

Imalwa called for concerted efforts from all law enforcement agencies to fight these crimes, through which hundreds are defrauded of their hard-earned income.

Scammers, she said, are using social media platforms to commit the crimes.

Swakopmund Junior TC inaugurates new members

Berry Kamana has been elected as Swakopmund's Junior Mayor, deputised by Preston Husselman. The Junior Council consists of learners from various schools around Swakopmund. In her opening speech, Mayor Berry Kamana committed to being the voice of change as they seek solutions to their daily problems.

"Youth empowerment will be a cornerstone of my tenure as Junior Mayor. I believe we need each other, and we are the only ones who can truly serve and save ourselves. The ideas, the innovation, and the energy of our youth can guide positive energy."

Swakopmund mayoral development fund aids schools

The Swakopmund Municipality, through the Mayoral Development Fund, has donated N$200,000 to all schools in Swakopmund.

Mayor Dina Namubes believes education is an important tool to eradicate poverty.

The donation was handed over at a ceremony attended by all the beneficiary schools.

Swakopmund has 20 public and private schools.

Over the year, the Mayoral Fund donated N$1,000 to each of the schools, which is to become an annual contribution to the awarding of the best performers.

Strengthening women in leadership workshop

The Parliament, in collaboration with the International Parliamentary Union, is hosting a three-day workshop aimed at strengthening women's representation in leadership roles.

The speaker, Professor Peter Katjavivi, expressed his satisfaction with the diverse expertise represented by participants from various countries and the IPU Headquarters who are attending the workshop in Swakopmund.

The workshop, Professor Katjavivi says, is intended to produce recommendations on subjects that can be addressed in both legislative chambers concerning gender mainstreaming.

Red Ribbon project launches

A teaching and learning initiative aimed at bridging the subject comprehension gap between learners in public schools and their counterparts in private schools was launched in Swakopmund.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Directorate of Education, Arts, and Culture and the Red Ribbon Bright Futures Project, a social engagement endeavour.

As part of the project, learners from under-resourced public schools will have the chance to engage with their counterparts at private schools.

NSA gears up for 2023 Census

Namibian Statistics Agency (NSA) Statistician General Alex Shimuafeni is confident that the 2023 Population and Housing Census will be less prone to errors than ever.

Shimwafeni says the NSA will deploy a digital enumeration system for the first time this year.

The NSA continued its information-sharing engagements at a media briefing held in Swakopmund.

The Statistician General, Alex Shimuafeni, says the digital system will also reduce the waiting period for survey results.
