Minister of Justice and Labour Relations Wise Immanuel has clarified that same-sex couples cannot marry in Namibia under the law. The clarification came after Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi asked whether the court ruling had changed Namibia’s position on same-sex marriage.
Namibia’s Minister of Justice and Labour Relations, Wise Immanuel, has urged foreign governments to respect the country’s approach to same-sex marriage and LGBTQ issues, saying the matter requires “thorough and extensive consultation” at home.
The National Council members still expressed reservations regarding the proposal to legalise same-sex marriage in Namibia, citing traditional norms where such unions were not historically recognised.
The Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Dr. Albert Kawana, has introduced a new bill aimed at regulating the solemnization of marriages and addressing the validation and recognition of certain marriages.
