The South African Supreme Court of Appeal has upheld the plea that was made to it by the family of Zambia's late former President Edgar Lungu, overturning the August 25 High Court judgement which initially favoured the Zambian government. 

South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal is expected to deliver its judgement tomorrow in the case concerning the repatriation of former President Edgar Lungu's remains to Zambia.

The court reserved judgement after hearing submissions on May 29, 2026.

The South African Supreme Court has set aside judgement on the burial dispute of the late former Zambian President Edgar Lungu.

The burial impasse of the late former Zambian President Edgar Lungu between his immediate family and the Zambian government will be resolved on Friday. 

The hearing over the Pretoria High Court judgement on the repatriation of the former President Lungu's remains involving the family and Zambian government is set for May 29th.

The development has been confirmed by the family's spokesperson, Makebi Zulu.

The Pretoria High Court in South Africa has set aside its 22 April ruling on an urgent matter in which the Lungu family was granted custody of the body of the late former Zambian President Edgar Lungu.

The Zambian government and the family of former President Edgar Lungu will appear before the Pretoria High Court tomorrow to determine custody of his remains.

Honey Attorneys of South Africa, acting on behalf of the Zambian government, have taken possession of the late former President Edgar Lungu's body from Two Mountains Mortuary, where it has been held for over ten months. 

It is still uncertain when the remains of Zambia's former president, Edgar Lungu, will be buried.
Lungu died nine months ago, and the burial process has been delayed due to court battles between the family and the government.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a subpoena to Two Mountains Funeral Services, where the late former president of Zambia, Edgar Lungu's body, lies, directing that the body of the late former president be released into police custody.
