Okapale residents bemoan lack of bus and taxi rank

Residents of Okapale in Windhoek's Goreangab informal settlement have been pleading for a taxi and bus rank for more than ten years now.

The residents say they are forced to walk a long distance to the nearest bus and taxi rank to get to school or work, this situation could easily expose them to potential criminal incidents and the vagaries of unfavourable weather conditions on occasion.

A meeting held in 2021 involving the councillor, NABTA, and the City of Windhoek instilled hope among the residents.

However, to date, no tangible actions have been taken.

CoW implements average electricity tariff increase

The City of Windhoek (CoW) has implemented an average electricity tariff increase of 8.9%, effective August 1st.

The increase comes after bulk electricity supplier NamPower pushed up its electricity tariff from N$1.82 to N$2.12 per kilowatt for the 2023–2024 financial year.

This is an average increase of 8.97%.

The City of Windhoek's increase last year was 7.8%.

CoW councillors urge to work together

Windhoek Mayor Joseph Uapingene has urged fellow councillors to work together and get rid of the 'I don't care mentality' for the greater benefit of the people.

Uapingene said this during the council's general meeting.

The Mayor says that while challenges may not be solved on the same day they were created, there is a need to pull together as councillors to provide development.

He emphasised that despite differing beliefs and opinions, all councillors are required to stand together for the greater good.

Applications for City of Windhoek's ECD centres open 26 July

The City of Windhoek (CoW) is urging parents to enrol their children from one year to five years at its Early Childhood Development and Pre-Primary centres.

The application forms will be available from 26 July at all the centres between 08h00-16h30.

The centres are located in Rocky Crest, while Jonas Haiduwa and Aam Been Dee centres are situated in the Okuryangava Residential area.

The City's Pulbic Relations Officer, Lydia Amutenya, couldn't emphasise more the importance of early childhood development as a foundation for the growth of any child.

Car guards livelihood under threat

The livelihoods of car guards in Windhoek's Central Business District are under threat following the outsourcing of parking management by the City of Windhoek to KeyPlot Investment, effective July 19.

There are about 58 car guards who have been operating in the CBD for years.

At the time when parking metres were operational, each one of them paid 60 dollars to the municipality monthly.

And although the parking lots were managed by the City of Windhoek, they too made sure that your car was not broken into.

City of Windhoek Parking Management System reintroduced

The City of Windhoek Parking Management System has been reintroduced, and motorists will be required to pay a fee of between three and eight dollars per hour for parking on certain streets.

The Parking Management System is one of the social services the municipality provides to motorists.

The City of Windhoek Public Relations Officer, Lydia Amutenya, explained that the system was suspended due to a lack of service providers to manage it.

Vendors along Mandume Ndemufayo Street given notice to vacate

The City of Windhoek has given notice to the vendors trading along Mandume Ndemufayo Street opposite the University of Namibia (UNAM) to vacate before July 12 this year.

The group spokesperson, Klemens Ishindwa, explained that the City of Windhoek's decision will affect them greatly, and they are thus seeking a fair hearing.

CoW residents owe city N$1.2 billion

As of last month, the City of Windhoek's total debtors' book stood at N$1.2 billion.

According to its spokesperson, Lydia Amutenya, after a public notice that households would be disconnected if they didn't pay up, clients have been flocking in to make arrangements to avoid being inconvenienced.

The disconnection is focusing on accounts in arrears of 30 days or more.

Amutenya reiterated that the credit control policy is usually underestimated and the residents do not take it seriously, hence the decision.

Residents of the Babylon informal settlement in the Tobias Hainyeko Constituency have voiced their concerns regarding a decision by the City of Windhoek to divide plots where they currently reside to accommodate more informal settlers.

Some are feeling aggrieved, as they believe that the plots they are being allocated are too small to accommodate their large families.
