Civil servants on maternity leave to get full salaries

Civil servants on maternity leave will now receive their full salaries.

Making the announcement, Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says the N$15,000 benefit currently provided by the Social Security Commission (SSC) has been found wanting, especially for civil servants who earn more than what is provided.

In the event that the mother dies, the father of the child will be given paternity leave and receive the benefit. In the absence of both parents, the primary carer will then receive the benefit. All these are on the condition that they are civil servants.

NUST responds to allegations of maladministration

The Namibia University of Science and Technology has responded to allegations of maladministration made against the university and its Vice Chancellor Dr. Erold Naomab.

The allegations stem from three letters written to the institution's council and to the Minister of Higher Education, Innovation and Technology and circulating on social media. 

One of the letters was authored by NAPWU while two more were delivered anonymously.

NIMT employees have not received their salaries for December 2022

Employees of the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology have not received their salaries for December.

Workers held a countrywide demonstration to demand their salary payments.

At Arandis, workers marched from the shopping centre to one of the two campuses, at the town.

The employees are not only demanding their December salary which is usually paid late but also want contributions towards the medical aid and pension fund as well.

NWR, NAPWU sign new wage agreement to increase several benefits of employees

The Namibia Wildlife Resorts and the Namibia Public Workers Union signed a new wage agreement that will see increases in the number of their benefits for the 2022–23 financial year.

The parties also agreed to reinstate overtime and travel allowances, which had been suspended due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In terms of the agreement, employees in the bargaining unit on job grade A will receive a 13% salary increment, while the salaries for those in grades B, C, and D will increase by 7%, 4.6%, and 2.5%, respectively.

Otjiwarongo Municipality employees demands for a once-off, undisclosed payment

About 160 employees of the Otjiwarongo Municipality have taken to the streets to demand a once-off, undisclosed payment as compensation for a failed salary and wage negotiation for the 2021–2022 financial year.

The workers, under NAPWU, are demanding their dues as all efforts were allegedly met with disapproval by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni.

Evans Maswahu elected as NAPWU Union president

Evans Maswahu was elected as Namibia Public Workers Union President, while Hilma Uushona and Samuel !Oe-Amseb are the first and second deputy presidents, respectively.

Petrus Nevonga has retained his position as General Secretary, deputised by Matheus Ndeshikeya.

None of the nine candidates was challenged for the top leadership positions during Napwu's 10th congress at Swakopmund. 

10th NAPWU National Congress commences

The Minister in the Presidency, Christine ||Hoebes opened the 10th NAPWU National Congress on behalf of President Hage Geingob in Swakopmund.

The two-day congress is expected to make changes to the union's constitution and elect new leadership for the next five years.

The congress is held under the theme "Workers Demand Job Security, Affordable Services, and Promote High Productivity in the Era of COVID-19 and Beyond."
