Namibia's beef exports to the European Union are under threat as the EU's new deforestation regulation comes into effect on 1st January 2025. 

This regulation prohibits the entry of commodities linked to deforestation after December 2020, including beef, unless stringent environmental standards are met.

Namibia wants preferential treatment by US

The Minister of Agriculture, Carl Schlettwein, says the subsidised commodities in the US markets would make it difficult for Namibian products to enter the space.

As a result, he says, the two countries could discuss the possibility of preferential treatment for some products.

The minister said the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres should create a position within the UN that takes responsibility for water.

Ethiopian agricultural delegation commends Namibia on high sanitary standards

Ethiopia has commended Namibia for being one of the most experienced African countries in sanitary practices, especially with respect to the requirements of international trade.

This was said by a high-level delegation on agriculture from Ethiopia, who are in Windhoek on a benchmarking visit to Namibia.
