City of Windhoek's progress after the 2021 elections

Breadcrumb

After the 2021 elections, opposition parties gained control of a number of local and regional authorities, forming coalitions in the absence of an outright majority.

However, service delivery at many of these local authorities has since slowed down. This includes the City of Windhoek, the biggest municipality in the country.

Since independence, the City of Windhoek has always been under the control of the Swapo Party.

For years, opposition parties in the council were in the minority and could not stop any council decision taken by Swapo.

Opposition parties walk out again

Opposition parties again walked out of the National Assembly in protest of what they termed the bias of the Speaker in the way he handled parliament.

Upon resumption of the house this afternoon, NUDO MP Joseph Kauandenge stood up and registered the discontentment of opposition party members, saying all of them will walk out of the National Assembly until the Speaker, Peter Katjavivi, provides an explanation for yesterday's situation in the house.

Kauandenge stressed that they are disturbed by the Speaker's bias, which is against the oath he took when assuming his office.
