Attempted hijack of a cargo truck on the road between Kalkrand and Mariental

An attempt to hijack a cargo truck on the road between Kalkrand and Mariental in southern Namibia was foiled by the alert and brave reaction of the truck driver. When nbc News arrived on the scene, about 25 kilometres south of Kalkrand, the team found the truck, carrying bricks, having come to a hurried standstill in the lane of the oncoming traffic. Glass splinters lay strewn across the road, while some bricks were found on the road surface. The truck driver said he stopped to tie a loose strap on the truck, which holds his cargo of bricks in place. As he was fastening the strap, he saw a man emerging from the bushes next to the road, brandishing a knife. The driver said he was chased around the truck by his attacker and in the process, the attacker jumped in the truck and started driving. The driver of the truck then jumped on the back, trying, by all means, to stop his attacker from continuing to drive. He eventually managed and it appears he was able to hurt his attacker who brought the truck to a standstill and jumped out to flee into the bushes. Blood splatters were visible in the truck and on the road surface. The Namibian police were on the scene to take a statement and a short while later the driver was able to continue his journey to Windhoek.
