Chaos erupts at NYC media conference

Chaos erupted at a media conference held by the National Youth Council (NYC) between the representative council (RC) and the old board members. This argument was over the appointment of the new board by the RC. The media briefing was meant to announce the outcome of the special representative council meeting held over the weekend. The term of office of the old board members came to an end in May this year and the NYC board requested for an extension, which was granted by the Minister of Sports, Youth and National Service. The meeting, however, repealed the extension of tenure, in accordance with the Act, which gives the power to NYC RC to make the decision when the general assembly is not in session. The representative council chairperson, JP van der Westhuizen said the resolution was taken by RC, which is the second-highest decision-making body and the interim of the general assembly, which the Youth and Sports Minister endorsed. Ndahafa Hapulile, who is an elected member of the old board, is dissatisfied with the lack of communication by the Ministry and the Youth Council, adding that they have been engaging but not getting feedback, and that is why they went to the higher office. The five new nominated members to serve on the interim board are yet to receive their appointment letters. They include Eva Awases, Elwin Gariseb, Melinda Mogotsi, Marvin Veseevete and Hermann Nakwatumbah as chairperson. The interim board will serve until the sitting of the general assembly scheduled for later in the year.
