COMMONWEALTH DAY 2022

President Hage Geingob says Namibia recognises the importance of connectivity, innovation and transformation as key elements to deliver its future goals, in line with the objectives of the Commonwealth. This, Dr Geingob says, is in line with Commonwealth Day's theme this year, which is "Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming". Commonwealth Day is annually observed by the more than 50 Commonwealth of Nations from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe. This year, the bloc is focusing on transformation to help achieve goals like fighting climate change, promoting good governance and boosting trade. President Geingob, in his Commonwealth Day message, said that as per the Harambee Prosperity Plan II, Namibia endeavours to redress inequality, alleviate poverty and create employment opportunities, especially for the youth. He said over the past two years, Commonwealth countries have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including loss of lives and plans for socio-economic advancement being interrupted. With enhanced vaccination efforts and strict Covid guidelines, Geingob emphasized, Namibia has buttressed resilience and can begin to look forward with hope to a better future for humanity. This year also marks the 70 years of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II's reign, who is also the head of the Commonwealth. President Geingob sent a congratulatory message to the Queen, describing her as an admirable milestone. The 54 member bloc leaders are set to convene for the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in June this year in Rwanda.
