ECN rejects two RDP candidates after investigation shown they were illegally nominated

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has rejected two candidates of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) after an investigation has shown that they were illegally nominated in both, Windhoek West and Karibib Constituencies, respectively. As a result, the electoral body decided to reprint ballot papers in both respective areas, and they are expected to arrive today, Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer, Theo Mujoro, has indicated. Mujoro also said they observed irregularities in the use of pictures and spelling mistakes on ballot papers, in areas such as Otjombinde, Otavi, and Omatako. He said, for instance in the Otjombinde Constituency, the surname of an independent candidate was wrongly spelt which also necessitated a reprint of ballot papers for the area. In Otavi, however, the electoral body observed that they used a photograph of a SWAPO candidate in the place reserved for an independent candidate. Meanwhile, in the Omatako Constituency, a similar scenario occurred, which warranted a reprint of ballot papers. Uniprint, a Durban-based company which secured the tender to print the ballots, started the reprinting of the new ballots last night, and they are expected to arrive in the country today. Mujoro emphasised that all candidates who were affected will have an opportunity to inspect the new ballot papers upon arrival. In addition, he also warned that members of the public who do have face masks on the voting day will not be allowed to vote. The electoral body, Mujoro says, will only use and provide pencils for voting on ballot papers, as opposed to pens amidst a surprise reaction by candidates.
