Education invests in online content

The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture has made N$27 million available for the development of online teaching and learning materials, in response to the effects of coronavirus pandemic on education. Executive Director, Sanet Steenkamp says the ministry has partnered with the Namibian College of Open Learning (NAMCOL) to develop online teaching and learning materials for Grades 8 to 11. She says that they are also developing materials for the new advanced system. Steenkamp says the materials are being developed after the ministry was caught off-guard by the COVID-19 pandemic early last year. She says N$15 million was budgeted from the ministry's 2020/2021 operational budget for NAMCOL to develop a full syllabus and transform tuition to virtual methods. About N$2 million was spent on acquiring 250 laptops to be used for training all the teachers forming part of the project on ways to develop online content. The ministry further provided N$4 million to NAMCOL for admission of Grade 12 learners and N$6 million to develop content for the advanced system, among other expenses.
