EEFA calls on farmers to use livestock ear tags correctly

The chairperson of the Eastern Epukiro Farmers Associations (EEFA) has asked farmers to brand their livestock. Katjinduu Tjahuha says the Meat Board of Namibia's recent workshop at Omaueuozonjanda demonstrated that most farmers were ignoring requirements to put ear tags on all their livestock. He says the Meat Board requires all farmers to place ear tags on all livestock older than six-months. However, farmers are flouting requirements and only putting ear tags on livestock they wish to sell. The EEFA chairperson says the association is in talks with the Meat Board to help farmers buy their ear tags. Chief Animal Health Technician at Epukiro, Charmaine Kauami has told NAMPA news agency that ear tags are part of the European Union's requirements for all countries that sell meat to its common market. She says farmers should consider the 40-days and 90-days required by law for ear tags to be in the system when selling livestock to assist with traceability of livestock. Kauami has stressed that farmers should continue buying and registering the ear tags while their association negotiates with the Meat Board to make them more accessible.
