Epupa residents want improved telecommunication and roads

The residents of Okangwati and surrounding areas in the Epupa Constituency say they are ready for their councillor provided that leader will bring development and services. Residents say they want improved telecommunication and roads in the constituency. Though there are several cellphone towers erected, some parts are still not covered because of the mountainous topography of the area. They thus demand improved cellphone reception and that the incoming councillor should make this a priority. They also want smaller roads connecting their villages with the main roads especially the Opuwo-Okangwati gravel road and the Okangwati-Epupa Waterfalls gravel roads. They further want better water provision through the drilling of more boreholes to give water to their livestock and for their consumption. Meanwhile, the marginalised communities, Ovatwe and Ovatjimba, resettled at Otjomuru village, in the same constituency, are threatening to not participate in the upcoming elections. The communities claim, ever since former Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Libertina Amathila retired, their living conditions have deteriorated. The communities claimed they are not given drought relief food and the destitute grant of N$500 per month, which was given to their schoolgoing children, has also stopped, thereby making lives at the village unbearable. As a result, many of these community members have returned to the mountains to hunt and gather wild fruits. Due to this changed lifestyle, they say they will not vote as they will believe voting will not bring any change. The communities of Otjomuru, including those at Ohayuua and Otjikojo, are marginalised Ovahimbas who were residing predominantly in the mountains of Epupa Constituency surviving from wild games, wild fruits and were resettled at these villages during the era of Dr Amathila, who they consider as their mother.
