Hecht says the City can no longer maintain some of its services like the City Police Force

Independent Patriots for Change Councillor and member of the City of Windhoek’s Management Committee Jurgen Hecht says the City can no longer maintain some of its services like the City Police Force. Members of the municipal police force, Hecht says, earn approximately twice as much as any NamPol staff member of equal rank. He says a request by the City Police Chief for an additional 193 police officers will further swell the already sky-high wage bill at the city. Hecht however admits that the services provided by the City Police are valuable, but says that with the existing NamPol presence in Windhoek it is a duplication of services at the cost of the Windhoek resident. Therefore he pointed out that the wage bill of the City Police is ‘simply unaffordable’ The finances of the City of Windhoek Hecht says, are in shambles as the City’s debt stands at N$2,8 billion, accumulated over the past 9 years says Hecht. Hecht says the city continues to operate at a loss and the situation must be rectified as soon as possible.
