The Keetmanshoop Municipality has warned its residents against slaughtering animals at home. The municipality, through a public notice, informed the residents that no person is allowed to slaughter goats, cattle, sheep or pigs in the vicinity of the town. Residents are also not allowed to slaughter without the approval of the Council. The notice signed by the town’s acting CEO Samuel Nashima says only authorised abattoirs and approved butcheries are allowed to slaughter animals in the town. The sale of meat must also only be conducted from authorized businesses, and tuck-shops, are only allowed to sell pre-packed meat products which they have acquired from registered butcheries and abattoirs. Those who sell meat from their residences or home shops are also required to keep receipts from where they had bought the meat. Slaughtering for traditional occasions such as weddings is however allowed but residents must first seek Council approval. Those who slaughter for their own consumption must do so outside the boundaries of the town. The notice says that the council is acting on the General Health Regulation of 1969 and the Red mead regulation and the Local Authorities Act 23 of 1992.
