Mario Mensah sentenced to 30 year imprisonment

Mario Mensah who was found guilty of murder and seven other crimes he committed in 2017 at Mariental was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment in the Windhoek High Court yesterday. High Court judge Christie Liebenberg found Mensah guilty on charges of murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, pointing of a firearm, discharging a firearm in a public place, theft and possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence. All of the crimes were committed during the early morning hours of 23 December 2017. Mensah was found to have gotten hold of a pistol at his father's bar. He took the gun with him as he left the club with a bottle of liquor. Later that night Mensah ended up shooting and killing someone at Mariental. Liebenberg, during the sentencing, said although Mensah displayed remorse throughout the trial, the seriousness of the crimes committed carries more weight. Liebenberg said that crimes such as murder militate the society and for that reason, the courts must echo the interest of society. "Namibia has gone through an irrational and triggery epidemic of violence for the past decade and the courts must send a strong message to the society and this must be coupled with long term sentence to set an example," said Liebenberg. Mensah informed the court that he suffered from a drug and alcohol problem during the time he committed the crimes.
