The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) says it paid out more than N$4 million in human-wildlife conflict settlements last year. Minister Pohamba Shifeta says that they settled livestock losses, crop damage and loss of human life or injury to humans. Shifeta says poaching and human-wildlife conflict continue to be major challenges faced by the ministry. But, he notes, in the annual report tabled recently in the National Assembly poaching of rhino and elephant was reduced during the 2019-2020 financial year. He says 46 rhinos were poached last year when compared to 78 in 2018. Minister Shifeta says only 13 elephants were poached last year when compared to 27 the year before. He says 363 people were arrested and 174 wildlife cases registered last year. The environment minister says predator-proof kraals, protection walls around infrastructure and alternative grain storage facilities were built in human-wildlife conflict hotspots to mitigate incidents. Minister Shifeta says in the report that seven people were killed and 37 others injured by wild animals during the course of last year.
