The Affirmative Repositioning Movement's leader Dr. Job Amupanda on Monday released a statement in which he alleges that money misappropriated at the National Assembly is more than N$5 million, as opposed to the N$1,2 million confirmed by Parliament. Dr. Amupanda further claims that the N$1,2 million mentioned by Parliament is for a year's assessment and involved only one employee. Parliament over the Easter weekend confirmed that three employees have been found to have misappropriated funds. Of the three, two have resigned and one was fired, Parliament said, but Amupanda says that there were in fact four employees involved in the embezzlement of funds. "It is clear that corruption indeed took place at the National Assembly and this corruption baptised only as 'financial irregularities' has not been reported to the Police or the ACC," says Amupanda. He further claims that Parliament is shrouded with historic theft and accused the leadership of the August House of covering up corrupt practices. The Information Services Division of Parliament in an immediate response says the Namibian Police have opened a case and one suspect was arrested and appeared before a Windhoek magistrate, the matter has been postponed to 26 May. Dr. Amupanda has called on the Speaker of the National Assembly Professor Peter Katjavivi and his administration to call a media conference and explain in detail the alleged theft at the House.
