Namandje's legal battle against ACC and Law Society delayed

The legal battle between prominent local defence lawyer Sisa Namandje, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Law Society of Namibia, has been put on hold until next Wednesday. The matter was scheduled to be heard in the Windhoek High Court Thursday morning but was postponed to 13 May 2020 on request by Namandje's legal team because he is reportedly involved in another matter which was also on the roll of the High Court for 7 May 2020. Thursday’s postponement was effected as per the agreement reached by the representatives of the three parties involved in the legal wrangle. Court documents availed to NAMPA on Thursday indicate that it is being investigated whether Namandje’s law firm - Sisa Namandje Co - was used by certain individuals for illicit payments linked to the much-publicised Fishrot corruption scandal. The corruption scandal involves a group of six men, including two former Cabinet ministers, who were arrested in November last year for allegedly receiving bribes amounting to more than N$150 million in return for giving preferential access to Namibia’s fishing grounds to Samherji, one of Iceland’s largest fishing companies. In the expected legal showdown, Namandje is fighting both the Law Society of Namibia and the ACC in an attempt to clear his name over the accusations regarding his role in the Fishrot corruption scandal. According to court papers, both the Law Society and the ACC want the lawyer to open up his books for their ongoing investigations, but he is allegedly not cooperating with the two bodies. It is reported that Namandje has now sought the assistance of top South African senior counsels - Francois van Zyl and Craig Webster - as well as local Advocate Raymond Heathcote for the legal battle.
