Major light oil and associated gas have been discovered in block in the Orange Basin, offshore southern Namibia. The Venus-1X discovery is located approximately 290 kilometres off the coast of Namibia, in the deep-water offshore exploration block. NAMCOR says the well was drilled by the Maersk Voyager drillship and encountered a high quality, light oil-bearing sandstone reservoir of Lower Cretaceous age. The block is managed by a Joint Venture group that includes TotalEnergies at 40% interest; Qatar Energy at 30%, Impact Oil and Gas at 20% and NAMCOR at 10% interest. The Managing Director, Immanuel Mulunga says the second light oil discovery by TotalEnergies is a demonstration of the world-class potential energy contained in the deep waters of the Orange River basin, which could prove to be a major game-changer for Namibia's economy and its people.
