Namibia, Botswana deliberate on incident involving Namibians killings by BDF

Deputy Prime Minister and International Relations Minister, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and her Botswana counterpart, Dr Lemogang Kwape, with their delegations held a closed meeting in Kasane, Botswana yesterday, on the incident that happened in November 2020 near Kasane where three Namibians and their Zambian cousin were shot and killed in cold blood by Botswana Defence Force (BDF). The meeting is aimed at bringing closure and amicability from the shooting incident. Nandi-Ndaitwah said some issues that emanate from the incident are becoming counterproductive for both Botswana and Namibia. Government and traditional leaders of the two blood-related neighbours must come together and find a solution. The International Relations Minister appealed to the Chobe District Council and the Zambezi Regional Council as well as Traditional leaders from both countries to craft modalities to start working together. She wants the councils to enter into working together agreements latest by end of 2021. Nandi-Ndaitwah's counterpart, Botswana Minister supported the idea wholeheartedly stressing that residents of both countries living along Chobe River are just not neighbours but blood-related brothers and sisters. Dr Lemogang Kwape, echoed sentiments by Nandi-Ndaitwah, that both residents must share the resources at the common boarders because that is where they have been deriving their livelihood for centuries. Munitenge of Basubia Tribe, Chief Sinvula said the incident did not bring hatred between the two neighbours but there is a need for Traditional leaders to be engaged in both countries as they deal with the grassroots communities. The meeting has been moved to Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region for continuation on 3 September before a communique is signed by both countries.
