Namibia Mineworkers Investment Trust (NAMiT) has started registering former and current workers in the mining and energy sector, to benefit from contributions or shares. According to Mine Workers Union of Namibia (MUN) President Allen Kalumbu the project is initiated to assist beneficiaries to claim from the member's return of shares from the trust. Kalumbu said, "NAMiT has defined its beneficiaries as ex and current members of Mineworkers Union and their descendants. This means that children of members are beneficiaries whether they are current, former or deceased. Kalumbu reckons that due to COVID-19, the registration process will be done electronically. The registration forms are available at all constituency offices countrywide, MUN and NAMiT project. A registration centre has been set up in Windhoek with a computerised system for online registrations, which will include telephonic and SMS hotline registration. Beneficiaries can send an SMS to the hotline number 30202 from any local network. BEN for beneficiaries and INFO for information. The centre will also be able to register beneficiaries who cannot communicate in English by adding the language of their choice. Beneficiaries are required to fill in mandatory, social and psychometric information, from which the trust would be able to determine if they qualify, and what type of benefits to roll out.
