NAMPOL still searching for two suspects in Outjo stock theft case

The Namibian Police (NAMPOL) were on Wednesday still searching for two of the three suspects that reportedly slaughtered eight cattle valued at N$90 000 on Farm Tsamis in the Outjo District on Monday. In an interview with NAMPA, NAMPOL’s spokesperson for the Kunene Region, Inspector Vehangaiza Ruiter, said the theft was discovered when one of the farmworkers came across dried meat hanging from trees and wires. “The poachers were not on the scene. The farmworker informed the farm owner who contacted the police. Officers managed to arrest one of the suspects and the other two fled the scene,” she said. Ruiter urged farmers to not engage poachers if they come across them and to instead contact the police for assistance. “They should not try to make any contact with them because poachers are usually armed and dangerous. Those who buy such meat should also be careful because we are going to hold them accountable. Farmers should look out for each other and make sure that such dealings are reported,” she added. Ruiter said the police plan to have meetings with farmers and community members to discuss how best they can work together to curb stock theft. “Stock theft remains a concern in the Kunene Region. Stock theft cases are on the increase but NamPol will not rest until every culprit involved in such activities is brought to book,” she said. The suspect who was arrested is in custody at the Outjo Police Station. A stock theft case has been opened and police investigations continue.
